As you may now be aware, UAL is investing in a major re-development of Camberwell College, upgrading the College’s facilities including the creation of larger studios and teaching spaces, a new lecture theatre, gallery, and fully accessible entrance, as well as on-site student accommodation.

In order to create these brand new facilities, the existing workshop block and canteen have been cleared, and a temporary refectory is being put into place for the start of the new term, before evolving into its final form once the redevelopment is completed in 2017.

As part of this exciting project, the University has teamed up with Hendzel Design Studio, a UAL Alumni operated furniture design company to work alongside the retail and catering team with a view create a fantastic, bespoke suite of canteen furniture (benches, tables, stools and stackable chairs) as well as informing the University’s approach to sustainability with regards future canteen concepts and design.

The overall theme of the cafe interior will reference the 1970s heritage of the College building whilst taking a modern approach to sustainability and the environment by incorporating sustainable design and construction practises: The collection of furniture and counters will be sourced and constructed of both reclaimed wood (within 35 miles of the assembly site) and Forest Steward Commission (FSC) approved wood in its entirety.

Additionally, as part of University’s commitment to student participation and engagement, Hendzel Design Studio will be working with Camberwell course leaders to arrange small group extracurricular involvement with students including workshops with MA Designer Maker students.
The project is to be completed in 2 sections, the first will be the temporary Pop-Up Coffee Bar positioned in what was the reception and gallery space within the 70’s block, and the second will be the relocation, expansion and evolution into the new Camberwell canteen in the brand new Academic Extension building.
The Camberwell Pop-up Coffee Bar is scheduled to open 07/09/15.
